Wongawilli Celebrated 35 years

On Sunday 7 August fifty people attended Heininger Hall at Dapto for celebration of dance and music with Wongawilli Colonial Dance Club.

The club grew out of a WEA class in August 1987 and blossomed over the years with three prongs – Wongawilli Band; Wongawilli Colonial Dancers demonstration group; and weekly Wednesday night dances. Dave De Santi, supported by a dedicated team, set the club in concrete for its first 27 years.

Since re-emergence from Covid restrictions, currently dances are being held (loosely) twice a month on Sunday afternoons at Heininger Hall in Dapto with welcome music from Chord-eaux Band and friends plus traditional bush music CDs.

Tributes were expressed for Wongawilli Band for their years of magnificent music including Reg Murray who has recently passed away, as well as the late Peter Ellis for his tireless work and contribution to dance and music.

Upcoming dance dates : Aug 21, Sep 4 & 18, Oct 2, 16 & 23, Nov 16 & 20, Dec 4 & 18.

What a wonderful milestone to achieve. Wishing all involved all the very best for the next 35 years of dancing in the Illawarra.
