Helen Begley is a Melbourne Songwriter who “writes a mean song and performs like a rough angel”. (David O’Connor, Trad n Now). Her songs drag you into the past where you’ll be immersed in the world of women in 1830’s Sydney and the Goldfields of Victoria where tragedy and humour meet love and laudanum. They’ll take you to the suburbs of Melbourne where the aching thrum of a freeway and the rattle of trams at night form the backdrop to romance and longing.
Helen has toured extensively, playing at festivals and gigs across Australia and New Zealand. She has recorded many albums with different groups including Melbourne folk band, “Milk” and “The Good Girl Song Project. Helen’s folk song cycle, “Voyage,” appeared on the Victorian VCE drama playlist and was nominated for three Victorian Green Room Awards in 2021. She is currently working on a new folk song cycle that begins in Sydney in the 1830’s and ends in a bungalow in Bendigo in 2022.
