Saturday 25th May the Loaded Dog Folk Club will resound with songs of the working class, social justice, unions, and the big issues that concern us all, with guests eminently appropriate to the task: the Sydney Trade Union Choir and the redoubtable Maurie Mulheron.
Two 30 minutes sets from each act.
Maurie Mulheron is an experienced singer with a background in theatre, and his ability to connect with audiences through song, humour and stories makes him a very engaging performer. He is a well-regarded musician playing a range of instruments including the 5-string banjo, 12-string guitar, blues harp, piano and mandolin. Over the years Maurie has performed on stage with some of the giants of Australian folk music including Eric Bogle, Kev Carmody, Jeannie Lewis, Margret RoadKnight and Jim Conway.
Maurie’s musical activities began during the worldwide folk revival of the 1960s, and his band was chosen to be the opening act for Peter, Paul and Mary on their final Australian tour. He has appeared here and overseas at peak folk festivals, folk clubs, theatres, concert halls including the Sydney Opera House, and on countless protest marches and picket lines.
Maurie is the writer of the popular hit theatre production “One Word…WE! The Songs and Story of Pete Seeger & Friends”, on which he collaborated with the legendary Pete Seeger, spending some time with Seeger at his home in New York. More recently Maurie’s show, The Times They Are a-Changin’: the songs and stories behind Dylan’s masterpiece.

The Sydney Trade Union Choir is a community choir with strong links to the labour movement. Their songs reflect the values of their members, covering a range of topics including social justice, peace, the environment, industrial issues and the universal struggle for democratic rights.
Since their beginning in 1991 they have performed at peace rallies, protest gatherings, union conferences, folk festivals, memorials and celebrations. Their most recent appearance was at the Palm Sunday Peace Rally in Belmore Park.
Choir members come from all walks of life – teachers, public servants, wharfies, welfare workers and union officials. Some will be joining other singers and heading off to Timor-Leste in August joining in the celebrations marking the 10th anniversary since the Popular Consultation. The group has toured in Timor-Leste previously and forged strong bonds with people there.
