& Mothers of the Nation – In late 2019, Cliona Molins and Rosie McDonald were commissioned by the ‘Friends of the Parramatta Female factory” to write a song for the Bicentenary of the opening of the Female factory. This was the first of 13 subsequent Female factories that were built to incarcerate over 9,000 women in Australia until the mid 1800’s. An estimated 1 in 7 Australians are descended from these ‘Mothers of the Nation’ .
Collaborating and honing the songs over 2020 amidst the challenges of Covid lockdown, Rosie and Cliona researched the stories, gaining feedback from the historians and the initial 1 song became 4! They recorded the Suite “Mothers of the Nations” in late 2020 and performed the songs at the commemoration in Feb 2021.
It could have ended there but Cliona and Rosie decided to form a band as a platform for songs of and about women, black and white, convict and free, telling the untold stories both through originals and folk songs. The songs go to the heart of the Australian identity – stories of separation and loss and yet stories of hope, resilience, courage, humour and survival.
The Mothers of the Nation band are Rosie McDonald- Vocals – guitar, bodhran, Cliona Molins- Vocals Harp, Bodhran, percussion, Ann Palumbo- Vocals, double bass, mandolin, guitar, Jacqui McPhee- Vocals, fiddle, Nigel Lever- Mandolin.
