Sydney Trade Union Choir is looking for a new Musical Director to lead the choir from the beginning of 2019.

If you have well-developed musical literacy, a well-trained ear, experience in conducting amateur choirs and ability to work with singers of varying capacities, as well as an understanding of and sympathy with the trade union movement, this may be the role for you.

About the Choir

STUC, formed in 1991, is a predominantly acapella choir that sings at union conferences and picket lines, May Day, IWD and other marches and rallies, folk festivals, markets, pubs, clubs, parties and even funerals– wherever people are interested in workers’ rights, social justice, liberation, democratic and human rights, peace and the environment. Our repertoire includes Australian and international songs of struggle – traditional and contemporary, moving and witty, but always with a political message.

STUC is part of a network of union choirs across Australia and also works closely with the Sydney-based Solidarity Choir.

For most of the year, we rehearse weekly on Tuesday evenings between 6 pm and 8.15pm at the NSW Teachers’ Federation in Mary St, Surry Hills. We also have occasional weekend rehearsals and do an average of 12-15 gigs a year, mostly on evenings or weekends but sometimes during working hours or out of town.

About the Role

The MD leads the two-hour weekly rehearsals, and conducts the choir in performance. The MD works to develop the choir’s repertoire by sourcing suitable arrangements of songs and devising and delivering exercises and warm-ups to improve individual, part and overall choir capacities. The MD assigns singers to parts and identifies possible soloists and works closely with the Choir Committee to further develop the choir’s repertoire and ensure a settled schedule of work.

This is not a salaried position but the successful applicant will be paid an honorarium.
