Wombats Crossing are a part of the modern chamber folk movement. A trio of accomplished soloists, they combine to weave new tapestries from varied musical traditions across the ages and from around the world. Beautifully atmospheric one moment and driving the next, they combine the tight harmonic blending of three strong voices with virtuosic instrumental playing.
The Wombats were brought together in 2012 by Christine Wheeler, a leading light in Australia’s traditional music scene and choir master, woodwind player, guitarist and singer. She is joined by Rebecca Daniel and Leigh Birkett. Rebecca is a virtuosic violinist, singer, orchestra leader and composer whose credits range from the Australian Chamber Orchestra to sharing the stage with INXS and Barbra Streisand. Leigh has been a touring accompanist on the festival circuit for many years, favouring the rich altered tunings of the Celtic guitar style that are so suited to the melodic and rich harmonic nature of modern traditional music.
