The Shiny Bum Singers + Witches Leap @ The Loaded Dog

August 24, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

$18 – $20

60 minutes each from The Shiny Bum Singers & Witches Leap

The Shiny Bum singers present Rampant Bureaucracy.

Rampant Bureaucracy tells the (almost) true story of a failed government program (or should that be programme?) complete with political grandstanding, officious advisers, hard-working bureaucrats, consultants, cover-ups and whistleblowing. There’s even an advocacy group called SCORN and an investigative journalist.

The Bums perform the work songs of the Public Service in traditional working dress. They sometimes stray into political satire, and other life experiences such as rugby and visiting the dentist. They sing parodies and encourage audience participation by projecting the choruses for singalongs. From fire drills to audits, system crashes to ministerial interference and even office romances, no subject in the workplace is safe from their pens (or keyboards) – nor any song! They even write musicals!!
The Bums were created to perform at the National Folk Festival in Canberra in 1999 and have been performing to packed audiences ever since. This is their 11th appearance @ The Dog, their first being in 2000.

Witches Leap is a project combining the talents of three performers who have performed at folk festivals from Cygnet to Woodford.  They take the dark modal sounds of old Ireland, filter them through the hanging swamps of the Blue Mountains and cut them with original convict-noir folk songs of black bushrangers and errant redcoats. Born out of the kitchen table sessions of County Katoomba, this trio features the ancient earthy tones of the uilleann pipes, wooden Irish flute and bouzouki, along with acclaimed songwriting from Paddy Connor (Lime and Steel). With original tunes springing from the local sandstone and mythology, Irish trad music goes on a journey through the grit of early New South Wales.
Paddy Connor: Known for his folk-grass band Lime and Steel, Paddy turns to original tunes on the uilleann pipes and whistles, with gospel convict and folk-noir ballads thrown in for good measure. Jade Tinkler: A classically-trained flautist with a masters degree in conducting, steeped in an overwhelming passion in Irish-traditional music. Leigh Burkitt: A sought after accompanist skilled arranger and lead player, Leigh has performed on guitar and bouzouki at festivals across the country with Martin Doherty, Chris Wheeler amongst others.
