Strawberry Thieves are Sydney’s newest vocal harmony group comprising Christina Mimmocchi (Blindman’s Holiday), Jess Ciampa (Monsieur Camembert, Marsala, etc) and Lisa Cartwright. With their joyful sparkling harmonies, these well-travelled musicians join forces to present a trove of songs, old and new, local and from out there.
Jess Ciampa – Multi-instrumentalist who performs regularly with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Brandenburg Orchestra, Monsieur Camembert, Marsala and Jeff Duff. Career highlights include tours with Tina Arena and Ian Moss. He toured Europe for several years with the Spaghetti Western Orchestra including at The Proms in the Royal Albert Hall in 2011.
Christina Mimmocchi – Performer, composer, choir leader – Christina’s love of vocal harmony and songs from around the world led her to touring internationally with renowned a cappella group Blindman’s Holiday, leading choirs all over the place and writing songs that connect people, places and inner imaginings. She held the National Folk Fellowship in 2010 and her latest production is 1917:strike which celebrates the centenary of the Great Strike in Australia
Lisa Cartwright – Performer and music educator, Lisa’s passion for bringing music into everyday life has seen her run a thriving flute studio for over 20 years, as well as singing at every opportunity. With a classically trained background and orchestral playing as her foundation, Lisa loves to diversify and has performed both vocals and flute with a number of acoustic groups and been a Teaching Artist with The Song Room. Strawberries sing Leonard Cohen’s Who by Fire
The Sydney Trade Union Choir was founded in 1991 as an community choir with strong labour movement connections. Socialist a cappella music for the active lefty. Keeping alive the spirit of the workers struggle. Giving support to Unions everywhere in their campaigns for better pay and conditions for workers. The defeat of oppression wherever it exists in the world. All this while singing. STUC singing Solidarity Forever
The Macabre Sisters are three mischievous members of the Sydney Trade Union choir – Diane, Deb and Marjory, accompanied by their more serious keyboard player, Clive. Their current repertoire is drawn from the songs of Tom Lehrer, the well-known satirist and mathematician, most famous in the 50s and 60s. The satirical and politically incorrect words and the cleverness of the music of Tom Lehrer’s songs have timeless appeal. Though the songs have audiences laughing out loud, the Macabre Sisters perform in sombre but saucy black outfits to reflect the darker and often macabre nature of their themes – murder, lust, incest and other salacious behaviour!
