Solidarity Choir: Sing Welcome
June 23 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
One event on June 24, 2018 at 1:00pm
Join Solidarity Choir for free workshops in Newtown and Ashfield to bring the community together in peace and (four-part) harmony.
The choir has received funding from the Inner West Council to host these singing workshops as part of Open Inner West, a 10 day festival celebrating culture and diversity in the Inner West.
Our event is called ‘Sing Welcome’. We want to bring people together who want to learn songs that celebrate peace, culture and diversity. We invite refugees, people seeking asylum, humanitarian entrants and anyone who wants to stand in solidarity with these communities to take part and sing in a show of welcome.
We will be teaching songs in English and other community languages, including a song from Aleppo, Syria and a song from Africa from 1-4pm at each workshop. From 4-5pm, we will walk to the streets and sing the songs in a pop-up street choir. You don’t need to be able to read music or sing well to join in. In fact, you don’t need any musical skills at all. We are aiming for a good heart-warming sing that brings people together.
