May Day Celebration Concert – 7pm.
Illawarra Folk Club have lined up one of the best May Day concerts in their history and all they need is an audience to appreciate the talent. In the spirit of unity & egalitarianism the price of entrance is just $15 members, $20 others. As you know May Day is International Workers Day. It grew out of the attempt by workers to gain an 8 hour day. Maurie Mulheron brings his old mate Pat Craigie down from Noosa to join him on stage so he can pretend to be a band. Maurie Mulheron will lead us all in some rousing songs that have changed the course of history. SallyForth are Wollongong’s finest Folk quartet. Chris Wilson – a fine artist & musician, lives at Mt. Kembla. Her musical roots wind back into folk, jazz & variety. Paul Spencer – inspired by such as Judy Small & Eric Bogle, Paul writes about social & environmental issues, often with a note of satire & humour. John Tubridy, a gifted songwriter & musician, will bring his biting satire. Claire Roberts. Apart from her politically incisive songwriting Claire presents the songs of Joan Baez, Mary Travis & many other iconic female folk singers. Treva Taylor is a regular Figgy Session poet. He writes his own incisive poetry but also delves into the works of Lawson, Paterson, etc. A devotee of John Dengate & Blue the Shearer. Zlatko plays with his Balkan Cabaret. Fiery, powerful, gentle, romantic. The captivating music of Romany gypsies & Balkan folk songs. Traditional workers songs, in another language, give a great understanding of the universality of Labour movements music. Illawarra Union Singers, Containing many of our members incl. life member Mairi Petersen. They have performed at all of our annual MAY Day concerts & will start the concert off with a rousing working class anthem.
