Elizabethan Gems with Contemporary Sparkles
Elizabeth I was an accomplished musician who loved ostentatious jewellery and elaborate headdresses. Elizabethan Gems is inspired by music and jewellery in Elizabeth’s life and times. Along with English composers from the court of Elizabeth I, such as John Dowland and Orlando Gibbons, our program includes music by the Renaissance Italian composer Maddelena Casulana. We are also performing some Spanish Renaissance music that surely would have been familiar to Elizabeth since her youth.
Now a few words about the contemporary sparkles side of the program! The viola da gamba or viol consort was one of the most favoured musical ensembles in Renaissance times and we enjoy presenting some of the richest repertoire from this all-too-rarely heard genre. But we are also committed to performing beautiful and thought-provoking contemporary music.
